Why the Job Centre is Awful

2/16/2015

For the past six months I've been visiting the Job Centre as someone who requires their service as well as serving as their unpaid General Administrator for a brief period from October to December. I have to say I haven't liked anything about my interactions with them at all and through my experiences I've realised that they're a dreadful organisation and are a real problem at the heart of our society.
First, I'll talk about what it was like to be a customer. I need to pay £60 a week as rent and they were giving me £57, so, they weren't giving quite enough. It also costs £5 to travel there and back on the bus, but at least they do cover transport costs... Or, at least half of them; they have a ludicrous policy of not covering your travel money on 'Signing Days' which, for me, a person who is 21 or younger, is every other weekly visit. So they only really cover 50% of the travel costs, if that. They never bring it up and you can't have them automatically add it to your payments either, so, if you forget to say something, you don't get it. They never do back payments either.
I suppose the worst thing wasn't that they only gave me £57 a week (which wasn't enough) but the fact that they had decided that, until I left them, I would only have £57 a week. During those six months, I had little bits of part time and temporary employment here and there, which you would have thought would be a nice financial aid for me, but, nope! If I earned more than £5, every penny I earned was taken out of my payments. So, really, it makes applying for part time work, especially part time work that you don't even like, almost a complete waste of time. It will be a new addition to your CV and I guess that's all you're supposed to take from it, because every bit of work you do while at the Job Centre will feel like it was unpaid.
But, maybe they've got really good customer service skills and are really helpful? Nope to both things. I can very quickly explain all the 'help' they give you in your job search; they'll print off an advert for one random job in the area, tell you to apply for it and if you don't they'll cut you off. So, it just boils down to negative reinforcement, really. It's also painfully obvious that you're not seen as a person to them, rather just another number in the system. Despite the fact that I did a work placement there for a couple of months, even my allocated 'work coach' struggled to remember my full name the whole time (even though it was written on the screen in front of her!). Anything you tell them about the kind of work you're interested in doing is always completely forgotten by the next time you come in (or probably as soon as you leave the room) and I can't honestly say I was given any 'help' at all when it came to finding a job. No pointers on making CVs or cover letters, no advice on what a degree can do.
Though it was while I was working there on my work placement that I realised just how awful it was there. I had to sign a confidentiality form before I started, so I shall have to tread lightly in regards to what I can say now. One of my duties there was to sort their incoming and outgoing mail and, fairly regularly, the incoming mail contained complaints and these complaints illustrated quite clearly that the Job Centre is deeply inconsiderate of the unwell and the disabled. Not that they're considerate of any of their customers; when I had to help customers on the computers (which was one of my duties) the staff would often make derogatory comments about them when they were out of earshot. Often, rather hypocritically, they would joke that customers were 'slow' because they couldn't use the computers well, despite the fact that the majority of the staff there only had the most limited understanding of how to operate their computers. And if making fun of them isn't bad enough, there were at least two occasions where a 'job coach' actively decided to lie to their customer before they arrived!
The customers really are nothing to them though; for a few days I was asked to carry boxes of files up stairs so that they could be filed later. I didn't know the correct way to file the papers, and I told them so, only to be told every day that I'd be told how to 'tomorrow'. Eventually tomorrow arrived over a week later and they told me how to file them (in two seconds "alphabetical by name" so goodness only knows why I wasn't told sooner) so I went upstairs to file these ten boxes full of paper work, only to find that they had sent somebody up a little earlier to destroy them and they were already gone! I certainly hope that didn't cause trouble for anyone, but it almost certainly did.
These are the only things I remember at the moment, though there are doubtlessly other stories of their awful uncaring attitude which I'm forgetting for a second. I've also said nothing of their sanction-happy mentality; they're rewarded for sanctioning customers and cutting off their money and so are always keen to do so; I, thankfully, was able to avoid this, though my brother was given a two month sanction for failing to apply for a job which he wasn't shown how to find  online; how many of the less computer-literate customers must get sanctioned for this? And how many of them really need the money? How many will starve without it? It's disgusting and I sincerely hope that some changes are made soon.

New Year, New Trusty Water Bottle

1/5/2015

It's my first blog post of 2015 and, it just so happens, I also just got myself a fresh Trusty Water Bottle. Of course I do this every month, but today seemed a good time to talk about it as there's actually an interesting philosophical idea hidden inside my Trusty Water Blog which I'd like to talk about.
My Trusty Water Bottle exists as a concept as well as it does as a physical object. It's the water bottle that I currently have and I will always refer to it as the same thing, even though by this point there have been almost a hundred individual bottles. Is it really the same?
When my friend Matt said, in 2008 "Why the flonk do you always have that water bottle with you these days?" (except with a slightly ruder word than 'flonk') was he talking about the same thing as my friend Tülin when she said last year "I can always recognise you by your water bottle!"? They were both talking about my Trusty Water Bottle after all.
"But there are actually lots of Trusty Water Bottles!" do I hear you say? Well, no, there aren't. The one in my pocket is my Trusty Water Bottle, not the one that was melted down in a recycling centre. There's always only one Trusty Water Bottle!
"But they are physically different objects!" and? So am I, really. Every atom in my body at this moment will have been replaced since 2008. But I'm still the same person, aren't I? Just like my Trusty Water Bottle. So, if there's been multiple Trusty Water Bottles, there must also have been multiple Adam Randalls.
But then, now that I think about it, how would I even know? I certainly like to think that I have changed since 2008, so how can I be one hundred percent sure I am the same person? What if I went to bed one night, my mind dissolved in my sleep and was replaced with a new one with all the same memories as the one it replaced. It'd be impossible to know.
My Trusty Water Bottle may have actually been multiple bottles, but that doesn't change the fact that there is one Trusty Water Bottle, much like the ever changing atoms that make up my body don't change the fact that there is only one of me! Perhaps we put too much emphasis on the physical side of things, when, really, everyone and everything are just ideas, in the end.

Changing Beliefs

5/30/2014

Recently, I've found myself in an unusually high number of discussions/arguments on the internet. It's not that I actively want to get involved in big debates (especially when it's a subject which people are quite angry about), in fact I don't like discussing things with strangers in that way very much, but just coincidentally it's happened a lot lately.
Anyway, the reason that I'm mentioning this is that I've come to a conclusion about the whole thing. If you are going to engage people in a discussion about beliefs, I think it's very important that you go into it with an open mind. Think to yourself that maybe the other person is going to be able to change your mind, don't just automatically assume they're wrong because they represent a different point of view.
I say this because, recently, somebody posted something which was very strongly against something which I thought was actually a very good idea. I posted a reply, telling the person that I thought it wasn't such a bad thing, and asking a few questions about why it was so bad. The other person didn't really respond to any of my questions and several people commented in agreement with me. Still, all the other person would say was essentially 'you don't understand' without addressing any of the counter-arguments. The other person got very upset and eventually said they wouldn't be commenting any more.
What I can't help but wonder is this: did they think that they were right and even though they couldn't respond to the counter-arguments, there were adequet responses? While I hate to judge their actions in that way (perhaps they just really struggled to articulate their point of view) it seems that this was the case, based on the evidence. If you enter a public forum to discuss your point of view, without evening accepting that you could be wrong (I certainly kept wondering if I might have overlooked something) you're liable to just end up upsetting yourself and others.

Time Capsule

3/21/2014

Inspired by Laci Green's recent time capsule video I've decided that I want to make a time capsule blog entry. Basically, what I'm going to do is write down several questions for the me of five years from now then, on 21st March 2019, I'll make a post where I answer all of them.  So, here are the questions for my twenty-five year old self:

1. Are all the people you know now still alive? I hope so!
2. Are you still alive? That would also be nice. If not, I suppose this entry was a slight waste of time.
3. Are you still updating this blog? I love it so much now, and I'd hate to think you'd lose interest. Even if you don't update it now, use this time capsule as an excuse to do so.
4. Do you also still update your Finger Puppet Show? If not, why don't you revive it?
5. When was the last time you saw Chloe, Dalfino, David, Egan, Mairi, Naomi, Oscar, Rory, Sophie or Stacey? If it's been a very long time, please be sure to try and arrange something soon.
6. Also, for the people you're not in contact with so often, are you still arranging regular meals to meet up at?
7. Have you had any more writing published in the last five years?
8. How did you do at university?
9. Are there any important people in your life that I don't know yet?
10. Been anything new, Waltons-wise?
11. Are you employed? If so, what are you doing? If not, good luck!
12. Where do you live? Are you still at home? Have you moved to Bath? Or are you somewhere else entirely?
13. Finally, I quite enjoyed this, so, why not make a capsule to open in 2024?

This Entry is Problematic

3/14/2014

I recently came across a Tumblr site called Your Fave is Problematic. What this website does is it takes celebrities and makes a list of every 'problematic' thing they've ever said, done, or taken part in. Mainly the lists are made up of things people have said which aren't very politically correct such as a comment that reinforces gender roles, or which reinforces stereotypes of the LGBT community and so on. Of course I don't like it when people say or do things like that, but, I also have a lot of problems with the idea behind this site and I think it could even be damaging to its cause.
If somebody who never really thought too much about feminism, homosexual rights and so forth, came across this site, what are they likely to think? Well, they'll see lots of their favourite celebrities listed and shamed for lots of things they've done. Except, many of the things on these list seem nit-picky to me , somebody who finds it very important to be politically correct about things, so how are they going to seem to somebody who's never really thought about it? It's going to make them think "Wow, feminists are really whiny and annoying, I'm not going to take them seriously!" (feel free to substitute 'feminists' for racial equality activists or LGBT activists) and so they're not likely to research the subject further and their views of these wonderful causes are soured. This site makes all of these movements look like they're about sitting back and judging everybody, which is already how they're viewed by some, and so Your Fave is Problematic doesn't appear to help any of the causes it represents.
For me, the judgemental mentality of this site is very much at odds with these movements. I support them all because I want to help those who are oppressed by society (indeed, many close friends of mine are members of oppressed groups) but Your Fave is Problematic seems to be taking something that is all about helping and supporting others and turning it into about judging people. The site advises people that "When praising [people], don’t ignore the problematic stuff. Talk about that too." which seems to be an awful rule to me. Imagine there's a feminist who's done loads of good work against gender inequality and you want to raise support for them, you're not going to say to them "Oh yes, they've written some wonderful thought provoking articles. Although ten years ago they used 'gay' as a derogative" why should bad deeds lessen good ones? Imagine using that rule with friends, you're just about to introduce an old friend to a new one so you say "They're marvellous, one of the best friends I've ever had... Oh, but back in school they made a racist joke, and a couple of years ago laughed at a sexist one." it's just ridiculous. Somebody may have done a lot of good, progressive work, but people will ignore it because they only see the negative things listed, again is damaging to the movements it represents.
I want to reiterate that I don’t like it when I hear somebody (famous or otherwise) saying something that I find problematic, but I'd certainly never make a list of every bad thing they've ever said so that it can be preserved for eternity. Surely the time and energy put into making this site could have been better spent on making in-depth guides on how to avoid accidentally offending people, rather than just telling people their wrong? A lot of the examples listed are probably a case of the person not knowing they've said anything offensive. At very least, they could have made a list of celebrity’s good, progressive acts to go alongside the bad ones.

Ten Things: Treasured Items

11/20/2013

I was on David Tubb's blog the other day and I came across this really lovely entry which has inspired me to make a post about ten items that are of significant value to me. I'd also like to say, that being fond of physical possessions is often criticised as being materialistic and I think I agree in the case of things such as solid gold yachts and the like, but in today's entry I'm going to talk about ten items I'm very attached to because they remind me of happy memories or of relationships with close friends and I don't think that's at all materialistic. Of course, I have a lot more than ten items that are very special to me, so I had to leave a lot out, so maybe I'll make a follow up post at some point, but, anyway, here they are:
Picture
LJ the Cheetah

This was brought back from South Africa (I think, it may have been somewhere else) by a friend of mine and then given to me as a gift. There was a time when I was very close with this person, but now the pair of us don't seem to have any contact. This isn't because anything bad happened, we just went in separate directions when we went to university, but this little wooden cheetah is a fond reminder of our past friendship.

Picture
Picture of David and I

Sadly, I can't see David quite as often as I used to, but I see this picture of he and I every single day as it sits on top of the bookshelf beside my bed. He surprised me with this picture one time when I came round for a visit, and it was a lovely treat. Even better, he has his own identical picture up at his house! You may not be able to tell from the photo, but he has also edited a picture of Gallifrey into the background, which is a nice touch.

Picture
John-Boy Walton Action Figure

The Waltons is one of my absolute favourite television shows. Like Doctor Who, it's one of the only things I'm always watching. As such, I was very pleased when my Mum gave me this as a surprise Christmas present last year!

Picture
Aeroplane

This does have a special name, but, I don't remember what it is. At the end of the summer I got to meet my internet friend Rhinowater in real life for the first time, and it was wonderful. When I first saw him, he gave me this model aeroplane as a gift, having bought one for himself too. We did plan to have a play with them at a park, but unfortunately we didn't get a chance to. In a way, it's a bit bittersweet, as I may not get to see him in real life again or his sister (an old friend of mine), but primarily this reminds me of the happy time I got to spend with him.

Picture
Colin the Cow

I bought Colin and wore him on my jacket as a bit of an in-joke between a couple of friends of mine. I don't wear him so often now as he's damaged and I don't want to make things worse, but he still regularly appears in my webcomic, Finger Puppet Show! I wrote a bit about why I like Colin so much before.

Picture
Yo-yos

For years I really, really wanted to learn how to use a yo-yo, then last Christmas a friend of mine bought me one and taught me how to use it! Then it broke a few months later... But then they got me another one that's still fine now! I don't think I could ever bring myself to throw out the, broken, green one. Yoing a yo-yo is often quite therapeutic, I find.

Picture
Heartfelt Card

After a certain family tragedy, I was off school. Two days later two good friends of mine popped by with this absolutely amazing card signed by all of my friends. Even now, six years later, looking at it makes me happy.

Picture
TARDIS Poster

As I mentioned above, I love Doctor Who. I never really had any posters up in my room, but then one day a good friend of mine was visiting Corsham for a while and they gave me this. It was so unexpected and kind of them, so I put it up as soon as I got home. Now it's a pleasant reminder of both one of my favourite TV shows and one of my favourite people! It's up on the wall beside my bed.

Picture
Fourth Doctor Scarf

More Doctor Who! Not only is this a fantastic replica of the Fourth Doctor's scarf, but it was a great Christmas present from a couple of friends of mine. It looks really cool and it's really good at keeping me warm on cold days.

Picture
Trusty Water Bottle

Of course this had to be included! It's the item all my friends associate with me. This very blog is named after it! Of course, in reality, there have been more than sixty individual water bottles, but as I throw one out and it's replaced with another, the essence of 'the' Trusty Water Bottle transfers from one to the other. It's a wonderful all-purpose tool which can put out fires, clean up messes, provide water, act as a relaxant, act as a stress ball, be a pointer, give me energy... It can do anything, basically and I feel strange without it. I started carrying it in 2008 and I have fond memories involving it and almost every person I've ever met. That could be a blog post all on its own...

Water Photography

Water has to be one of my favourite things to photograph. Due to its fluid nature, it can look completely different in different circumstances and all of them look lovely and natural. There aren't too many, but here are my favourite photographs I've taken of water.
Ice and the ocean are things that I must get around to photographing...

Terrible Teacher

10/23/2013

The time was 2:55 p. m. and the school day would be over in five minutes. We weren't working right up to the bell either, the supply teacher (who I had had problems with before) had let us sit at the tables and casually chat while we waited for the end of the day to come. To keep an eye on the time, I had my phone out, there were no clocks on the walls after all. With my phone out, I decided to pointlessly scroll through the menus in order to pass the time.
"Right," she said as she came up to me, "either you can give me that phone, or you're going to have to stay behind at the end."
"Okay then," I said, "I'd rather you'd keep me back at the end because I don’t want to have to give you my phone, I might well need it at some point."
"Give me your phone!" she shouted as she snatched it from me.
While I was disappointed about having my phone taken at least, I thought, I wouldn't have to stay behind at the end.
The bell rang and she said "Everyone can go..."
I got up and headed towards the door.
    "...except Adam."
I turned round and sat back in my chair.
Once everyone had left, she stood in silence looking at me.
"I thought you said that I could give you my phone or stay behind, not and stay behind," I said.
She walked towards the door and said "Follow me."
As we walked down the corridor I asked "Where are we going?"
She kindly told me that we were going somewhere called "Shut up."
Before long we had arrived at the school's main reception. She had a quick quiet chat to a woman behind the desk and then turned back to me.
"You're not getting that phone back for a long time," she said.
"I thought you could only keep confiscated phones for a week?"
"I can keep your phone as long as I like!" she shouted.
"But that's stealing," I pointed out.
    She said nothing.
"I guess I'll have to buy a new phone then," I said sadly.
"So you think you're better than me? Is that what you think?" she said, rather aggressively.
"I don't remember saying anything that implied that,"  I said.
"Well, you can go and explain yourself to Mr. Williams now."
Mr. Williams was the head teacher of the school. I wonder what exactly I had to explain as it all seemed quite simple to me.
We went in, and I took a seat on the opposite side of the desk he was sitting at while my supply teacher stood in front of the door.
"Why have you brought Adam here to me?" he asked her.
"Well, first he had his phone out in class, then he wouldn't give it to me when I told him to, and he's just been constantly rude since then. Just a minute ago I told him we'd have to confiscate his phone and he said 'Oh I don't care I can just buy another!'," she said, her voice quite strained.
I frowned. That wasn't quite how it happened..
"Do you like your teacher, Adam?" he asked.
I looked at her, and then I looked at him. I didn't want to lie, but, then again, I didn't want to her to start shouting again.
"Well, she's not my favourite teacher," I said, "but she's alright, I guess."
"So why have you been treating her like this then?" he asked.
Well, that was a tough question to answer. I'd much rather he'd ask her why she was treating me like that. I paused for quite a while and, for some time considered pleading my case and pointing out all that she'd done, but I eventually decided it would be a lost cause. It seemed that I would have to start lying.
"I've been very stressed lately," I said. "I guess I was inadvertently letting it out on her."
Since I was a teenager, and a lot of teenagers are stressed, I hoped that'd be a good enough answer.
He asked the teacher to leave the room and said that he wanted to speak to me alone for a few moments.
"What grades are you expected to get in your exams?" was his first question.
"Mostly Cs and Bs," I replied.
"Do you realise that, without this attitude problem of yours they could all be As?"
"Could they?" I asked, inwardly groaning.
"Yes, they certainly could. I have another question for you too."
    "And what's that?"
"Do you know what the word 'arrogant' means?"
I didn't want to sound arrogant, so I said "No, I don't. What is it?"
"I could've been a professional footballer, you know? I was just going up and up. But then I realised that I thought too much of myself, I was getting too cocky, I was too 'arrogant'. So I packed it all in and became a teacher," he said.
"Oh I see," I wonder what exactly he wanted me to say.
"I think you're too arrogant, Adam," he told me. "Tomorrow I want you to find your teacher and to give her a heartfelt apology."
He let me go then and I went home. Later on I sent an email to a friend of mine telling them about what had happened. This friend of mine happened to be the daughter of one of the English teachers and she told me that she'd already heard about it, because that supply teacher had come into her Mum's room and been complaining about me. I was told, through my friend, that the reason she was so angry was because I had been 'really sexist' and, in fact, it seemed to me that even my friend was a bit annoyed at me over that. I was pretty unhappy about this because, I'm always extra sensitive about these things, I'm a feminist, and to accuse me of sexism was rather ridiculous. Clearly, as she'd not mentioned it in the meeting with the head teacher, she'd just made up some lies about me afterward just because she hated me so much. I honestly can't think of another explanation. Luckily my friend believed my side of the story in the end, saying she always trusted me, which was nice.
The next day, I went through my lessons as usual with no intention of giving any apology. Unfortunately, I was called out of my fun Science lesson to go and see the head teacher in his office about the apology. He wanted to know 'how it went' so I told him I was saving it for the end of the day. I found her at lunchtime and gave the most meaningless and forced apology I'd ever given and hoped it would sound sincere.
"I saw you apologising to that teacher earlier," a friend of mine said to me shortly afterward, "it just sounded like you were being sarcastic the whole time."
One week later I got my phone back.
And so that's the story of the worst teacher I've ever had, I still find it hard to believe that anybody would be so unprofessional.

Mario & Sonic and The Pressing Social Issue

10/9/2013

Picture
Nowadays, whenever there is an Olympic event, video game producers, Nintendo and Sega are sure to release another instalment in the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series. This is all well and good until we get to the next one due for release: Mario & Sonic and the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014.
Why is this an issue, you ask? Well, the laws in Russia are shockingly anti-LGBT and they're not afraid to hide it. Many don't believe it is right for the Olympics to be held there, as it can be seen as a passive form of approval of their discrimination. By extension, people don't think that Nintendo should promote this game, because  they would also be approving the discrimination by not acting against it.
But, on top of that, having these loveable characters okay with this kind of hatred is completely incompatible with what we already know about them. A good example would be to take one of the most loved Mario characters: Yoshi. Yoshi would be thrown into prison under Russia's laws due to the fact that he is happily in a relationship with Birdo... Who is a transgendered woman. But that's not all.
Mario himself should feel quite guilty taking part in these games. Sure, Birdo was originally a villainous servant of the evil tyrant Wart, so he may not be too bothered about her going to prison. But what about Mario's old pal Vivian? Vivian is another transgendered female who, actually, was a villain at first as well, but she eventually saw the error of her ways and stood by Mario when nobody else would and basically saved his life. Surely he'd feel at least the tiniest pang of guilt, knowing she'd be arrested if she wanted to join him at the Olympics?
To take the idea of love only being moral between one man and one woman would actually mean that several more of our heroes would also be thrown behind bars. Sonic once shared a romance with a human being, and Bowser and Peach... Well, they get married in one of the games, and I don't remember it being annulled. It’s Adam and ‘Eve’ not ‘Animal Eve’ after all.
Finally, it just feels so wrong for these heroic characters to stand by and let this evil happen. For many young people just discovering their sexuality, video games could be one of their escapes when things become too stressful. To have Mario and Sonic happily running around and having fun, while innocent people are beaten and murdered on the streets just a few miles away would be a permanent smear on their characters.

Child Abuse

9/30/2013

About five years ago my friends and I often spotted a man who would violently hit or shout at his very young son. Now, if it had happened once, we may have assumed that it was just a bad day for the man and he had unfortunately lashed out on the boy because of it, but it seemed that every time we went to the local park, he was there doing some horrible thing to the boy.
Eventually, my good friend Elliott Egan and I (and possibly a third friend of mine, but I can't remember who) decided that it would be a good idea to intervene. So, when we next saw him violently swear or hit the boy, we went over to have a word with him.
"Alright, mate," said Egan, "leave him alone!"
"Yes," I said in agreement. "What you're doing is hardly necessary or appropriate."
"Shut up," he said to us. "You're lucky my son's here! You have no right to say that to me. You better hope I don't see you again." The violent man then grabbed his son by the arm and walked him away, leaving Egan and I with nothing but strong negative feelings towards him. With him gone, we continued our day as normal, trying to forget the unpleasant experience.
I told my Mum about it all afterward, and she suggested I not stay out late by myself due to his threat. While he was clearly not afraid to use violence, I wasn't too concerned as I didn't think the likelihood of bumping into him alone was that high, since I only ever saw him with his son during the day.
As it happens I did bump into him again, and as you can imagine, it wasn't the most enjoyable of meetings.
"Oh, it's you," he said contemptuously. "I'll teach you to tell me how to raise my son!"
"I'd rather you didn't," I said to him, and then quickly fled in the other direction. Despite my rather low level of athletic ability, I was somehow able to escape him; I guess it must have been some kind of adrenalin boost. That was the last time I ever saw him (and luckily Egan managed to avoid him too). That's twice now that I've had a violent threat and then never seen the other person again, but I suppose I can't always rely on being so lucky...
And that's the end of the story. You may ask, why did we not simply report him to the police? And that's a question I can't answer. It now seems such an obvious solution to the problem, but at the time, for whatever reason, it never really occurred. It's all quite sad, really, because when we spoke out against him, he clearly got very angry, for all I now, our actions could have simply lead him to unleash more anger on the child, and since we never saw him again, who knows what happened to the pair of them in the next five years? I can only hope things started to improve.
